Star Trek - Trailer 2 HD Quality (Dir. by J.J. Abrams)

Wikipedia
Star Trek is a science fiction film directed by J. J. Abrams, written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and produced by Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk. It is the eleventh Star Trek film and features the main characters of the original Star Trek series, who are portrayed by a new cast. It follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) enrolling at Starfleet Academy, his first meeting with Spock (Zachary Quinto), and their battles with Romulans from the future, who are interfering with history.[1] The film is scheduled for release in conventional theaters and IMAX on May 8, 2009 in North America and the United Kingdom.[2]

Development of the film began in 2005 when Paramount Pictures contacted Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman for ideas to revive the franchise. The creative team contrasted Orci and Lindelof, who consider themselves "Trekkies", with casual fans like Abrams, who all aimed to create a film that would interest a general audience. They wanted to be faithful to Star Trek canon, but also introduced elements of their favorite novels, modified continuity with the time travel storyline, and modernized the production design of the original show. Filming took place from November 2007 to April 2008 under intense secrecy. Midway through the shoot, Paramount chose to delay the release date from December 25, 2008 to May 2009, believing the film would perform better in the northern summer.

Lectures on how Google's PageRank operates

About
Link to course
Part of what makes Google such an amazing engine of innovation is their internal technology stack: a set of powerful proprietary technologies that makes it easy for Google developers to generate and process enormous quantities of data. According to a senior Microsoft developer who moved to Google, Googlers work and think at a higher level of abstraction than do developers at many other companies, including Microsoft: “Google uses Bayesian filtering the way Microsoft uses the if statement” (Credit: Joel Spolsky). This series of posts describes some of the technologies that make this high level of abstraction possible. The technologies I’ll describe include:

Youtube is finally going HD

"These new HD videos, however, are clearly a game-changer. Web video always had the name of having relatively sub-standard video quality and being generally grainy and hard to watch (and YouTube especially). Now, you could easily put up a screen-cast on YouTube in HD, or film a video with your new Flip MinoHD and have it seen in its full 720p glory."Readwriteweb

CNN is cool. In addition to the huge touchscreen “Magic Wall” (which was originally military technology), CNN’s Wolf Blitzer gets to play with Holograms today during their coverage of the presidential elections.

CNN’s Jessica Yellin is the guinea pig, appearing virtually with Blitzer.

I have no idea why Yellin doesn’t just go to the studio instead of being wherever she is, or why they don’t just point a camera at her and bring her into the story in the normal way, and I don’t care. They have a hologram, and if I wasn’t getting on a plane in twenty minutes I’d be watching CNN the rest of the evening.

Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson takes a spin of the Rolls Royce(RR) Phantom throw Hull. This is a personal favourite of mine, as he expresses something about design in the car, which was they had the money and resources to do some much, yet they did so little. And that made the car better.

Steve Ballmer talks about the future of software and mobile

Ballmer remains very bullish on search (advertising) and see's mobile as one of the new completely unconquered markets where new software will emerge. Follow up on the dicussion here

Ballmer and Winblad also discussed the mobile market. Ballmer is focused on the smartphone market, where Microsoft software is a major player. 125 million smart phones will be sold this year, he said, and that will grow to a billion in five years. He says proprietary hardware/software stacks (iPhone) will have trouble competing with the more open approaches, such as Microsoft, Android, Symbian, etc. He ads a caveat, however: users won’t trade off usability just to have different hardware choices. The operating systems must work seamlessly across different hardware configurations.

What took them so long to make another game?

Blizzard has a reputation for being very careful about the quality of their product. They've probably been testing and tweaking every aspect of the game since the beginning of the project, and they won't stop until the game ships out for retail shelves. All in the name of making sure the player loves the experience. I don't think they've disappointed yet. Long wait or no.youtube

FriendFeed and Plaxo’s Pulse

There is a sea change underway in social networking. If there were any doubt that we are moving from the “walled garden” phase to a new era defined by interoperability between aggregation hubs and the rest of the Social Web, recent moves by Facebook and MySpace should erase any doubt.
The biggest winners of the future will be the services that do the best job of harnessing the power of the virtuous cycle of social discovery at the core of “Social Web Aggregation.” Let’s take a look at how two pioneers of the new model are faring, Plaxo Pulse and FriendFeed…Music

My Idea - RealScrapbookStuff.com

This was a tough one. As I took my daily walk and started brainstorming various options for photo sharing services, I kept coming up with ideas. Problem was, they were all being done. Submit a photo via Email? Upload files without any sign-on friction? Mashup photos with music? Put live annotations on videos? (congrats, btw!) Argh! I kept racking my brain and finally decided to bring out my secret weapon - my wife. As she was running out the door, I asked her what problems she has with image/video websites. She thought for a few seconds and said “I need a website to help me to with my scrapbooking”. She headed out the door, and I had my idea for the day.
Now, I know a handful of you are already heading straight to the comments to post a bunch of links to similar photo sharing sites. However, every scrapbooking-type site I’ve seen falls into one of the following two catagories:
Use your computer to create a physical scrapbook that is mailed to you
Use your computer to create an online scrapbook that is embedded in social networks, blogs, etc..

This idea is different - I’m proposing a site where hardcore scrapbookers can upload digital photos to create scrapbook pages, and use digital reproductions of real stickers, stamps, and borders to mock up their pages. The site keeps track of all of the materials that are used in the online creation, and when the user is finished they would then have the option to purchase all of the raw materials (including the cropped, re-sized, printed photos) and have them shipped straight to your front door.
I’m not a scrap-booker myself, but based on observing my wife and her friends, here are a few problems I believe this would solve:

Midori is an offshoot of Microsoft Research’s Singularity operating system, the tools and libraries of which are completely managed code. Midori is designed to run directly on native hardware (x86, x64 and ARM), be hosted on the Windows Hyper-V hypervisor, or even be hosted by a Windows process. According to published reports, Eric Rudder, senior vice president for technical strategy at Microsoft and an alumnus of Bill Gates' technical staff, is heading up the effort. Rudder served as senior vice president of Microsoft’s Servers and Tools group until 2005. A Microsoft spokesperson refused comment.
“That sounds possible— I’ve heard rumors to the effect that he [Rudder] had an OS project in place,” said Rob Helm, director of research at Directions on Microsoft. He noted that it is quite possible that the project is just exploratory, but conceivably a step above what Microsoft Research does.Welcome to the test page function for fa Facebook test run.

A list of friends isn’t enough to create a sense of audience, it’s merely a pre-requisite. What users need the most is feedback (re-assurance) that their audience is 1) present and 2) listening to them.
Follow Me, Follow You. The loop starts with the notification that another user “is now following you” (on Twitter or Flickr or FriendFeed, which are all based on the same passive follower pattern). Note that Faceook’s model of a relationship is symmetric such that both users have to agree on being connected. (What are the implications?)
Let users know who’s following them – so obvious that it shouldn’t need mentioning

Blizzard has denied rumours that development on StarCraft II has been largely postponed until Diablo III is finished. In September, battleforums.com carried quotes from an "anonymous source from inside Blizzard" that said: "Starcraft 2 is still being worked on, but only by a minuscule amount of people compared to what Blizzard put on the Diablo 3 team."

The comments suggested that massively anticipated dungeon crawler Diablo III would be out before RTS StarCraft II, a reversal in expected release timings.

Zinedine Yazid Zidane (pronounced [ˌzineˈdin jaziːd ziˈdan ]; born 23 June 1972 in Marseille), popularly nicknamed Zizou, is a French former football midfielder. He was a member of the French national team that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and the recipient of the Golden Ball after he captained the French side to the 2006 World Cup final, a match that saw his career end in controversy after he was sent off for headbutting Italy defender Marco Materazzi.

He played for four European clubs, and won the 2002 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid. One of only two three-time FIFA World Player of the Year winners (Ronaldo being the other), he was also named European Footballer of the Year in 1998. In 2004, fans voted him atop UEFA's fiftieth-anniversary Golden Jubilee Poll, and he was included in Pelé's FIFA 100.
